How Many Leads Does a Trades Business Actually Need to Grow?

Getting more leads sounds like the obvious answer when you want to grow a trades business. But more leads doesn't automatically mean more revenue.
What matters is generating enough of the right enquiries, in the right locations, for the services you actually want to provide.
At Leads Everyday, we've seen businesses grow their turnover, expand their teams and take on higher-value work through consistent lead generation. But successful growth isn't simply about chasing the biggest possible lead number.
It's about turning opportunities into profitable jobs.
More Leads vs Better Leads
Imagine two trades businesses.
One receives 100 enquiries, but many are outside its service area, looking for services it doesn't provide or being sent to several competing businesses.
Another receives 30 relevant enquiries from potential customers specifically looking for the services it offers within its chosen area.
Which would you rather have?
For most trades businesses, the second scenario provides a much stronger foundation. That's why businesses should look beyond headline lead numbers and consider lead relevance, exclusivity, conversion rates and job value.
Start With Your Revenue Target
Instead of asking "How many leads can I get?", a better question is "How much additional business do I want to generate?"
Your required lead volume will depend on factors including:
- Your average job value
- Your conversion rate
- Your profit margin
- Your available capacity
- The services you provide
- Your target locations
- Your growth objectives
A mobile mechanic completing relatively small jobs, for example, may require a different volume of enquiries from a roofing company targeting projects worth several thousand pounds.
There isn't one perfect lead number for every business.
What Happens When Lead Generation Works?
Our client case studies demonstrate how a consistent flow of enquiries can contribute to wider business growth.
MK Car Care Ltd, a mobile mechanic business, increased monthly turnover from approximately £6,000 to £9,000 in three months. Jobs completed increased from around 20 to 30 per month, while average job value increased from approximately £200 to £250.
For JGM Mobile Mechanical Services, the transformation was even greater. Monthly turnover increased from approximately £3,000 to £12,000, while the business grew from one technician to a team of four and expanded from one van to three.
Hydro Octane DPF Cleaning increased monthly turnover from approximately £40,000 to £70,000, while remaining a streamlined one-person, one-van operation.
These businesses haven't all grown in the same way. And that's exactly the point.
Growth Doesn't Always Mean Hiring More People
For some businesses, success means building a team. For others, it means remaining small while becoming significantly more profitable.
JGM Mobile Mechanical Services used increased demand to hire staff, add vans and expand its coverage. Hydro Octane DPF Cleaning took a different route, increasing turnover and profitability while remaining a one-person operation.
Both are examples of business growth. The important question is what growth looks like for your business.
Your Capacity Matters
Generating 100 enquiries isn't necessarily beneficial if you only have capacity to complete another five jobs.
Before increasing lead volume, consider how much additional work your business can realistically handle.
If your diary starts filling consistently, you may then decide to:
- Increase your prices. Greater demand can create opportunities to focus on more profitable work.
- Hire another employee. Additional capacity allows you to complete more jobs.
- Add another vehicle. For mobile trades, another van can allow another technician to work independently.
- Expand your service area. Once you've established consistent demand locally, you may decide to target neighbouring locations.
- Focus on higher-value services. Growth doesn't necessarily mean doing more jobs. It can mean doing better jobs.
